Tips to Keep On Walking

Walk with a Friend
Find a friend to walk with. You can keep each other motivated. Walk and talk. If you need to discuss something with someone, see if you can do it while walking.

Get your friends or family together and go for a walk before or after dinner.

Stay Motivated

If you’re walking alone, try bringing a portable audio player along. Just make sure that you can still hear what’s going on around you.

Treat yourself to some scenery. Try new routes, beaches, parks, or trails.

Take advantage of the Appalachian Mountain Club Discount available through your health plan (BCBS members), and save 20% on a one-year individual or family membership.

Buy yourself some new walking shoes to get motivated.

Reward yourself. Every time you go for a walk, set a dollar or two aside. At the end of the month, do something special for yourself with the money.

Make Time

Take a walk on your lunch break. Walk to and from your errands. Try to fit small five to ten minute walks into your day.

When you park your car, park far away and walk to your destination.

Try walking early in the morning—it’ll help give you the energy you need to get through the day. In addition, studies show that people who exercise early in the morning are more likely to stick to their fitness routines.

Take brisk 15-minute walks during coffee breaks at work.

Remember to bring your walking shoes to work or keep a pair under your desk. That way, you’ll be ready to walk at a moment’s notice.

When the weather doesn’t cooperate, try walking indoors. You can also buy a treadmill or join a fitness center.
